You'll hear me chat about the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) on a regular basis during my consultations. What is the PNS and why am I so excited about it?!? The PNS is one part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and is also known as the "rest + digest" system. It helps to conserve energy, slows the heart rate, increases intestinal (digest) activity, decreases blood pressure and helps with recovery and restoration. The other part of the ANS is called the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) or "flight or fight" system which innervates tissues in almost every organ system.
